Congratulations on Adopting a New Pet!!

  • Before bringing your new pet home, do a walk through of your yard.  Assuming it is a fully fenced yard, check for any areas that your pet might slip through, broken fence boards, gaps in the fence, loose gate hardware and ensure these areas are repaired.  Ensure that items are not stored against fences making it an easy platform to climb & escape.

  • Always have your pet collared & leashed when taking them out to potty or for exercise in your yard.  Being in a new environment can be very stressful for your newly adopted pet.  Sights, sounds and other environmental factors which are out of your control may cause your pup to escape

  • Purchase an appropriately sized martingale collar or harness for your pet and ensure it is sized properly as well as an appropriate leash. A name tag with your contact information is also a wonderful addition.

  • Microchip your pet as soon as possible. This is a permanent form of identification. It's important to register your information with the appropriate microchip company ASAP &  keep your information up-to-date as this will identify both you & your lost pet should it be taken to a shelter or veterinarian.  Have your vet check the microchip at your pets yearly exam to ensure that it is still functioning & all information is up-to-date.

  • License your pet according to your local municipalities by laws.

  • Ensure you have high quality photos that are clear & show any identifying markings or features.  Full body photos and facial photos at several angles are always good to have.

  • Ensure that your pet is spayed or neutered.  It reduces the likelihood your pet will stray and it will increase their lifespan.

  • Early obedience training will also help to keep your pets mind and body active as well as help to prevent your pet from straying.

Prevention!!  It's Key!!
